History

Freed Estate owners planting

The Freed Family established their roots in Winston, Oregon in the year 2000 when they purchased a 36 acre farm property. Mike and Pam had visited the area many times while vacationing on Pam’s sister’s farm near Dillard. It was shortly after one of these visits that they focused on obtaining a property that would be suitable for growing wine grapes. Their search continued for several years until what is now Freed Estates Vineyards became available.

In the Spring of 2000 they cleared the land and with the help of family and friends planted what ultimately became 24 acres of Merlot, Syrah, Cabernet Sauvignon and Viognier. During the first years of operations their focus was set on selling quality grapes to local wineries. Along the way these wineries won prestigious awards for wine produced from Freed Estate grapes. Their ’02 Merlot won the Bronze medal at the 2005 Oregon State Fair. The latest award was granted to the 2008 Syrah produced by the Freed’s friend, Dick Cutler of the Flying Dutchman Winery. Not only did the Syrah win a Gold medal, it was also awarded “Best of Show” at the 2014 Newport Seafood and Wine festival.

The Freed’s changed course in 2009 and started work on their own winery building on the vineyard property. In addition to this milestone, part of the winery building has been converted to a finished tasting room and art gallery. Because they have roots in Hawaii, you will discover the Freed’s have incorporated a bit of Hawaiian culture to add to their guest’s wine tasting experience. You are invited to come share the Aloha spirit as you enjoy their quality selection of wines.
